Loren Humm Memorial Sugar Beet Grower's Scholarship

 

Scholarship Information

 
 
Loren Humm was a soldier, a member of the Breckenridge United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge of Alma, the VFW in St. Louis, and a past Master of Breckenridge Lodge #406. He served his community in many ways by using his passion, community service, and agriculture experience. As a farmer, Loren was also a leader in the agriculture community serving on several boards and as a founding Board Member for the Michigan Sugar Company. Established in 2013, this scholarship is a way of remembering Loren's dedication to his community and agriculture, in particular sugar beets. 

This scholarship supports and recognizes students who have a sugar beet growing background. 
 

Scholarship Criteria

 
·      First preference to seniors graduating from a Gratiot County high school.  If none, then previous graduates from a Gratiot County high school may be considered;
·      Applicant must be from a family of sugar beet growers, have executed a 4-H project related to sugar beets, or be from a family that owns sugar shares as documented by at least one letter of reference from a 4-H Advisor, FFA Advisor, and/or a field man; 
·      Applicant must have a 3.0 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale;
·      First preference to applicants pursuing a degree at a college or university.  If none, then applicants enrolled in trade or vocational programs may be considered;
·      Financial need is a consideration for this scholarship, but not a requirement;
·      Whether an applicant is pursuing a career in agriculture or ag-related business is a consideration for this scholarship, but not a requirement; and
·      If sugar beets cease to be grown locally or there are no applicants with family or 4-H connections to sugar beet growing as referenced above, the scholarship may be awarded to other crop growers meeting like criteria.
 
One scholarship available for as much as $1100.

Señora Kaufmann Memorial Scholarship

 
   

The Señora Kaufmann Memorial Scholarship was established in November 2020 by the family of Sally Kaufmann to honor her decades of service to teaching and continue her legacy in foreign language and education.  Señora Kaufmann’s passion for teaching Spanish and Hispanic culture, along with her special gift for connecting with her students and colleagues, made her a beloved educator.

Sally Kaufmann was dedicated to helping students further their education, achieve their goals, and literally explore the world.  She was a loyal confidant to countless students with whom she shared her wisdom and listened to their dreams. It is her family’s hope that the Señora Kaufmann Memorial Scholarship will assist Alma High School and other Gratiot County students pursue their passion in foreign language, travel, and international studies.
